The Changing Face of ‘Retirement’

My stepmother turned 60 this year — but if you think that means she’s slowing down, think again.

She’s in great shape, works in a technical field and volunteers regularly. She’s not planning to “retire” in the traditional sense anytime in the near future, either.

She calls it “the new 60.” And a lot of Baby Boomers have the same mindset. Their idea of retirement has shifted; it’s less about relaxation and more about staying active and involved in the community. Many even want to keep working, at least part-time, well past the age of 65.

However, in order to have that flexibility — to have control over how and when they’ll retire — they still need a solid financial strategy. And they need a financial planner who understands that not everyone wants the same kind of retirement.

For example, one person might plan to be semi-retired for a while, so they won’t need to replace all of their income immediately. Another might want to stop working completely, but still have enough income to donate to causes they’re passionate about. And everyone needs to think about housing and other costs that continue to rise, especially in an area such as Seattle.

At RainierView Advisors, we know everyone’s dream retirement is different — that’s why we don’t take a one-size-fits-all approach to planning. Here are five reasons Baby Boomers like to work with us:

  1. We don’t get paid by anyone other than our clients. We do not receive commissions from the sale of funds or products, and we operate under the fiduciary standard. That means we have one simple guideline that informs all of our advice: Is this best for the client?
  2. We’ve seen it all. RainierView Advisors principal Roderick Givens has been in the financial industry since the 1990s, so he has a wealth of experience in all kinds of market climates — from downturns and corrections to the booming economy of today.
  3. We don’t go it alone. A strong financial plan includes investments, but there’s more to it. That’s why we integrate planning with a client’s trusted advisors, such as their CPA, attorney, insurance broker and more. We also pull in bank statements and other key documents so we can create a total picture for each client.
  4. We treat couples as a team. Many financial advisors have a poor track record of addressing the matriarch of a family. We know that regardless of which spouse is the primary breadwinner, a strong team can make for a stronger financial future.
  5. We simplify the complex. We want our clients to understand both the what and the why behind our recommendations. And in addition to working directly with clients on their investments, we offer classes, seminars and other educational opportunities.

Whatever your ideal retirement looks like, it’s going to take some planning. Contact RainierView Advisors today for a free consultation and learn how we can help you get there.
